An unforgettable Ragamuffin experience

The Ragamuffin sailing tour along the reef from Belize to Placencia was without a doubt the best experience of our trip so far. The two day, three night tour cruises along the beautifully clear waters of the reef, with stops for snorkelling and fishing along the way. The nights are spent camping on the deserted Rendezvous and Tobacco Cayes. Tobacco Caye is only 200m long with no houses or running water. What an incredible place to spend the night!

We learnt to spear fish, peel raw shrimps the correct way, gut barracuda and even a touch of Creole. Two beautiful evenings passed drinking rum punch, eating fresh fish in coconut curry, making lobster ceviche and I even saw my first ever moonrise.

And that’s without mentioning the music! The three local Rastas who led the trip had put together the most hilarious mixture of 2008 reggae music which they played on repeat the entire trip. I don’t think I could ever get sick of floating along the blue waters of Belize listening to Shaggy and Sean Paul on repeat.

We arrived in Placencia on Friday night and had our first attempt at hostel cooking with the others from the boat (not a success, I think we’ll stick with tacos). Placencia itself is a quiet little town with just two hotels. There are no real roads, just paths in the sand and the houses were all in the typical Belizean style – two storey colourful buildings with roof terraces and balconies.
